Best lightweight electric mountain bikes

If you have read my e-MTB guide you already know where I land: the lightweight bikes are the ones I would own. Half the assist of a full-power e-bike, about ten pounds less to throw around, and a bike that still corners, jumps and manuals like the one you already love. This page is that half of the market on its own: every bike that makes weight, ranked by budget, the motors explained in one table, and the honest gaps between what the brands claim and what the scale says.

What counts as lightweight

The reviewers who test these bikes draw the line in about the same place: a compact 40-60 Nm motor making roughly 200-600 watts at peak, a 290-580 Wh battery, and a complete bike under about 20 kg, which is 44 lb. A full-power e-MTB runs 85-105 Nm, 600-800 Wh and 48-55 lb. Everything in between is marketing.

This guide uses weight, not motor size, as the rule, because weight is what you feel. A bike is in if its maker claims under 45 lb for the lightest build in the range. That lets in three bikes with bigger motors that still make weight: the Rocky Mountain Instinct Powerplay SL at 75 Nm, the Giant Trance X E+ Elite at 85 Nm, and the Orbea Rise, which runs 60 Nm in its normal RS tune and 85 in RS+. They carry a light full-power tag in the tables so you know what you are looking at. They climb harder than the TQ and Fazua bikes and drink their batteries faster doing it.

Two things the rule does not do. It does not admit bikes that only get close: the Amflow PX Carbon, Marin's Bosch SX Rift Zone EL and YT's Decoy SN all land at 45 lb or a shade over, so they wait in the honorable mentions below. And it does not care about the badge. Specialized, Santa Cruz, Pivot and Rocky Mountain say SL, Trek says Fuel+, Orbea says RS, Norco says TQ. Same idea, different sticker.

The motors, in one table

Torque is the number everyone quotes and the least useful one on the sheet. Two 60 Nm motors can feel completely different: the TQ HPR60 peaks at about 350 watts and roughly doubles your effort, while the Bosch SX peaks at 600 watts and can quadruple it. Read torque, peak watts and battery together, and treat any single number on its own as a sales pitch.

Two footnotes worth knowing. Bosch SX bikes shipped at 55 Nm and gained 60 with the Flow app update in autumn 2025, so a 2025 review and a 2026 spec sheet can disagree about the same motor. And Fazua shelved its range extender in 2025, so Ride 60 bikes run on the internal battery alone; the newer ones (Nebo Peak, Decoy SN) use a 480 Wh pack that also retrofits to the older 430 Wh bikes.

One row per model, priced from its cheapest build, weight from its lightest. Ranked within each tier on spec-for-money and my editorial take on each brand, the same rule every guide here uses, with no brand taking more than two rows. Worth knowing about, not in our database yet

The database behind these tables is refreshed monthly, and a few 2026 launches have not landed in it. These are real options; I just cannot rank them against the rows above until they are in.

What buyers get wrong

Claimed weight is a size small with no pedals

The Yeti MTe is claimed at 37.9 lb. That is the T4 build, size small, with the 290 Wh battery. Loam Wolf's size large test bike weighed 46.1 lb. Both numbers are true. When you compare bikes, compare the same size and the same battery, and expect a large with real tires and pedals to land 4-8 lb over the brochure. The weights in the table above are the brochure, on purpose, because they are the only numbers every brand publishes.

The battery is smaller, but so is the draw

A 360 Wh battery sounds like half a full-power bike, and it is. But the motor pulls a fraction of the power, so ride time is much closer than the numbers suggest. The catch is vertical. A light bike will happily do a three-hour ride; it will not happily do 5,000 ft of climbing in the top mode without the extender, and on a Fazua bike there is no extender to reach for.

A light e-bike is still an e-bike

Every bike on this page is Class 1: pedal-assist only, motor cutting out at 20 mph. Weight changes nothing about trail access. If a network bans e-bikes, it bans these, and the rider on a 38 lb bike who argues the point at the trailhead is the reason the next network bans them too.

Range extenders are not universal

TQ and Specialized sell 160 Wh bottle-cage packs, Orbea 210, Bosch 250, Rocky Mountain 314. Scott ships one in the box with the Lumen. Fazua-equipped bikes have none. If big days are the plan, that single fact decides between a Heckler SL and a Levo SL before any test ride does.

Who this class is for

The riders I steer toward a lightweight e-MTB are the ones who already like riding and want more of it: people fitting rides into an evening, riders coming back from injury, anyone whose crew got faster, and the growing number who own one bike and want it to feel like a bike. The riders I steer away are the ones who want the motor to erase the climb entirely. That is a different, heavier, more capable machine, and my full e-MTB guide covers it.

Common questions

How far does a lightweight e-MTB go on a charge?

Further than the battery size suggests, because the motor draws a fraction of what a full-power unit does. Trek quotes two to five hours from the Fuel EXe and its 360 Wh battery depending on the mode, and Loam Wolf measured a Yeti MTe using 192 Wh over a 13 mile, 1,300 ft loop. Where a light bike runs short is vertical, not time: a 4,000 ft day in the highest mode is extender territory, and on a Fazua bike, which has no extender, it means a lower mode.

Can I ride a lightweight e-MTB where regular e-bikes are banned?

No. Every bike on this page is a Class 1 e-bike: pedal assist only, motor cutting out at 20 mph. That is the category most US trail networks that allow e-bikes actually allow, and a lighter bike gets no extra access. A 38 lb bike with a motor is still an e-bike on a sign that says no e-bikes. Check Trailforks or the land manager before your first ride.

Is 50 or 60 Nm enough for steep climbs?

For most riders on most trails, yes, but the torque number alone does not tell you. The TQ HPR60 roughly doubles your own effort and peaks near 350 watts; the Bosch SX quadruples it and peaks at 600. Both are 60 Nm. On sustained steep pitches the difference is real, and a heavier rider feels it first. If you are over about 220 lb and climbing volume is the whole reason you want a motor, look at the light full-power crossovers in the table or at a full-power bike.

Lightweight or full power?

Full power if you are replacing shuttle runs, want maximum descending per hour, or ride with a fast e-bike crew. Lightweight if you love how a normal mountain bike handles and want the climbs taken down a notch rather than deleted. The light bike is the one I would own, and it is also the one that punishes you less when the battery dies eight miles from the car.

Do I need the range extender?

Only if your rides regularly pass three hours or 3,000 ft of climbing in the modes you actually use. The packs are 160-314 Wh, weigh a couple of pounds, take the bottle cage, and add roughly 40 percent to the ride. Scott includes one with the Lumen. Fazua bikes cannot take one, so if long days are the plan, that rules out the Heckler SL, Shuttle SL, Relay and Nebo Peak before you start.
