Privacy policy

Short version: we collect almost nothing. No accounts, no tracking cookies, no selling data - the only personal information we ever hold is an email address, and only if you choose to give us one.

What we collect

• Email address (optional). If you sign up for the Quarterly Ride Report or ask for your results by email, we store the address you provide plus a note of where you signed up (e.g. which page). If you asked for your results by email, we also store your results link, which encodes the answers you gave the quiz. Signups are processed by Kit, our email provider, with Netlify Forms as a fallback if Kit is unreachable.
• Quiz answers. Your in-progress answers are kept in your browser so a refresh doesn't lose your place, and they're cleared when the session ends. To build your results we send your answers to our own ranking service, where they appear in ordinary server logs like any other web request. Your answers are also encoded into your results link, so anyone you share that link with can read them. We don't sell them and we don't use them to build a profile of you.
• Standard server logs. Our host (Netlify) keeps standard access logs (IP address, pages requested) for security and operations, per their own privacy policy.
• Anonymous usage statistics. We use Umami, a cookieless, privacy-focused analytics service, to count page views and a handful of anonymous actions - starting the quiz, finishing it, clicking an outbound retailer link, and signing up for the newsletter. It sets no cookies, does not track you across sites, does not build a profile, and does not collect or store your IP address. We never send it your quiz answers, your height, your email address, or your results link. The only detail attached to an action is a broad label such as a budget band or a retailer name, which cannot identify you. It is served through our own domain, so your browser never talks to an analytics server directly and no third-party script runs on the page - but the data itself is processed on our behalf by Umami Cloud.

What we don't collect

No accounts, no passwords, no payment information, no advertising trackers, no social-media pixels, no sale or rental of your data to anyone - ever. Our analytics is cookieless and anonymous (see above), so there is no consent banner here because there is nothing to consent to.

How we use your email

To send the thing you asked for: your results link and/or the Quarterly Ride Report (about four emails a year - gear reviews, price-drop alerts on bikes you matched with, and noteworthy new releases). Every email includes a way to unsubscribe. We don't share your address with anyone except the service that physically sends the email.

Legal basis and retention. We process your email only with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing. We keep it until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, then remove it. Your address is handled by our email and hosting providers (currently Kit and Netlify), which may process it on servers in the United States; where required, that transfer relies on their standard contractual safeguards.

Affiliate links and cookies

When you click an outbound retailer link, that retailer or its affiliate network may set cookies on their site to attribute a purchase (that's how we earn a commission at no cost to you). That happens on their domain under their privacy policy - see our affiliate disclosure.

Your rights

Want your email deleted from our list? Reply to any email or write to us and it's gone. California, EU/UK, and similar residents: you have the right to access, correct, and delete personal data we hold - which, again, is at most an email address.

Children

The site isn't directed at children under 13 and we don't knowingly collect their information.

Changes

If our practices change (for example, adding analytics), we'll update this page and its date.
